news flash: WE HAVE A NEW BUILDING!
We are thrilled to announce that we HAVE CLOSED on a new property at 184 Summer Street (corner of Spring and Summer) in Somerville at the end of April! 184 Summer meets our needs with a large outdoor space, plenty of light-filled rooms for open play areas, and a central location very close to our current community. The same values that brought us all together under Agassiz's original roof--the sense of unrivaled community, the focus on engaging and nurturing cooperative education, and the true school-family partnership-- will continue to thrive at our new location in Somerville.
The Relocation Committee has been working diligently with several local lenders to procure a manageable mortgage and construction loan for the renovation. The total cost of the property and renovation will be $1.15 million. To date we have secured significant support through fundraising and cost savings, and anticipate a very favorable rate on our funding provided we can meet two conditions: additional grants and gifts to close the gap between funding and funds raised to date and a demonstrated commitment of the involvement of the Agassiz community.
This is where you come in. We now need to renovate the residential property so that it can be used as a school this fall. Please click on "4 easy ways to help", below, to see how you can help us raise this money. For a donation of $250, you can buy a tile to decorate and install in the new school! Please contact us for more information.

Why we need a new home fast: Since the 1970s, Agassiz Cooperative Preschool has been located in the basement of North Prospect Church. From this location, we provided decades of low cost, high quality, not-for-profit care and education to young children in Cambridge and Somerville. However, the church was sold recently, and despite the kindness of our new landlords in extending our lease for two years, we must leave the property in 2009. Our current goal is to raise enough capital to make a down payment on a local property (our bid has been accepted on a fantastic building in Somerville only a few blocks away from our current location) for a schoolhouse... current estimates (as of 2/2009) are that we still need to raise a minimum of $100,000 to make this happen and to keep tuitions affordable.
The online campaign is the latest chapter in our fundraising efforts. Our annual tree and yard sales (funding scholarships) have become beloved traditions in the neighborhood. To date we have held an auction gala (100 Red Balloons, October 2007) and two concerts (Preschoolapalooza I and II). All the parents and staff of Agassiz have been working overtime for this effort, but we need your help to make it happen!
Coming soon: how Agassiz got started, and more pictures!
